Marie Taglioni Riley 10/20/13
On April 23rd, 1804 a baby is born her name is Marie.
Trained in ballet strictly by her father named Filippo Taglioni. When she was 18 she did her first performance in Vienna.
Ten years later when she was 28 she was in one of Filippo’s dances called La Sylphide. At that dance she was the first woman to dance on Pointe shoes (Pointe shoes are a type of shoes were you can dance on your toes). Marie created a new style with beautiful floating leaps into the air. She also did some balanced poses arabesque (a pose where your balanced on one foot and the other foot is horizontally in the air). A very delicate use of points. The diaphanous (a light weight fabric) dress she wore at La Sylphide with its fitted bodice and its airy bell-like skirt it was the proto type of the tutu. The skirt at any length is still a dancer uniform.
She didn’t have only Paris at her feet she also had London, Milan, Vienna, Berlin, and St. Petersburg all hailing her as the greatest ballet dancer ever produced.
On April 24th, 1884 a baby dies her name is Marie.
